Intelligent Wireless Systems

Promoting smart connectivity through integrated communication, sensor technology, and edge AI processing.

3 Forscher und ein Roboter in einer Industriehalle

The “Intelligent Wireless Systems” division focuses on innovations in wireless communication and radar technologies across the frequency spectrum ranging from MHz to the very high GHz range. RF systems provide wireless connectivity for wireless communication systems (including RFID, WPAN, LPWAN, and 4G/5G). This enables mobile broadband connectivity for mobile devices (such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops), wireless “machine-to-machine” (M2M) communication—which connects billions of IoT devices—and, increasingly, wireless sensor networks in industrial applications. RF systems in the GHz range are also used in radar systems, which are a key component of autonomous driving, but are increasingly being used in medical systems and materials testing as well.

Research Areas:

  • Massive MIMO and Beamforming
  • Interference Suppression and Coexistence
  • Design of GHz CMOS RF Circuits
  • Design of RF Circuits with (Ultra-)Low Power Consumption and Wireless Power Transfer (WPT)
  • Integration of Heterogeneous RF Front-Ends
  • Processing of radar sensor data, including machine learning and sensor fusion
  • Secure Wireless Networks for the Massive IoT and Mission-Critical Communications

Research Expertise:

  • Advanced Signal Processing and Machine Learning
  • Design of Integrated High-Frequency and Mixed-Signal Circuits
  • Design of High-Frequency Front-Ends
  • Wireless Protocols and Standards (RFID, 802.x, LTE (including NB-IoT), 5G, …)
  • Virtual Prototyping, Measurement, and Testing

Projects

From fundamental research to industrial application, our projects drive innovation and create solutions for the technologies of tomorrow.

Indspeed

The INDSPEED project is developing a new ultra-precise magnetic encoder system based on TMR sensors and SmCo pole wheels.

Opal

OPAL focused on the development of SAL's first integrated optical phased array system for LIDAR applications. Special attention was paid to the selection of the optical photonics platform to achieve low-loss operation with high bandwidth….

CoRaLi-DAR

As part of the EU-funded CoRaLi-DAR project, a low-cost, power-efficient, and reliable advanced sensor and ranging system is being developed as a platform for the automotive market and beyond. The project aims to combine both radio and light-based sensing in one module, leveraging the high-resolution capabilities of LiDAR and the high reliability of RADAR in adverse weather conditions.
