Start of the project: Q3 2024

Objective

Development of high-precision loss models for inverters operating with electric motors and extension of the Inverter-Designer tool based on these models to support the design and optimization of electric drive systems.

Loss determination models for inverters operating with electric motors:

The development of the inverter loss models is closely linked to the existing motor models, from which the current waveforms are derived with high accuracy for the respective pulse patterns. From this, the on-state losses and switching losses are determined based on the current values at the exact switching times. Unlike existing loss calculation tools, the planned development will include the exact current values (turn-off and turn-on values corresponding to the ripple) in the calculation. With this approach, current changes due to e.g. saturation effects in the motor will also directly influence the inverter loss estimation.

Inverter design tool:

In a second phase of the project, a tool will be developed that comprehensively supports and facilitates the architecture and selection of components. The inverter designer will propose inverter solutions by simply entering appropriately evaluated target parameters in terms of compactness, efficiency and manufacturing cost. Such an expert system will to support engineers who are responsible for the design of the entire electric drive system.

Expected Results

  • Simulation models and algorithms for highly accurate determination of inverter losses

  • User-friendly parameterization option of the models for different topologies and different components (transistors, DC link capacitors)

  • Inverter design tool that is able to develop proposals for inverter solutions from target parameter values
