About SAL

Insights into SAL’s mission, values, research activities, and contribution to Europe’s innovation ecosystem.

Microsystems

We develop next-generation MEMS and microsystems by integrating advanced materials, processes, and device technologies. Together with partners from industry and academia, we translate innovations into scalable prototypes for piezoelectric, photonic, and magnetic systems—thus bridging the gap from the initial idea through proof-of-concept to a production-ready prototype.

Zwei Hände, die einen Microchip halten

Paving the way for the next generation of MEMS and microsystems

We combine advanced materials, processes, and equipment technologies to develop innovative microsystems with a clear path to industrial application. Our strength lies in integrating different technology areas within a single environment—this enables efficient development processes, faster iterations, and scalable solutions.

Our work covers the entire value chain—from design and simulation through microfabrication and integration to system-level testing. With our state-of-the-art SAL MicroFab and comprehensive laboratory infrastructure, we support rapid prototyping and accelerate technology transfer to industrial manufacturing.

We work closely with partners in key industries, including:

  • Semiconductors & Photonics
  • Automotive & Industrial Sensors
  • Quantum Technologies
  • Advanced Electronics

What We Offer

  • End-to-End Development of MEMS and Microsystems

Projects

From fundamental research to industrial application, our projects drive innovation and create solutions for the technologies of tomorrow.

Indspeed

The INDSPEED project is developing a new ultra-precise magnetic encoder system based on TMR sensors and SmCo pole wheels.

Opal

OPAL focused on the development of SAL's first integrated optical phased array system for LIDAR applications. Special attention was paid to the selection of the optical photonics platform to achieve low-loss operation with high bandwidth….

CoRaLi-DAR

As part of the EU-funded CoRaLi-DAR project, a low-cost, power-efficient, and reliable advanced sensor and ranging system is being developed as a platform for the automotive market and beyond. The project aims to combine both radio and light-based sensing in one module, leveraging the high-resolution capabilities of LiDAR and the high reliability of RADAR in adverse weather conditions.
