About SAL

Insights into SAL’s mission, values, research activities, and contribution to Europe’s innovation ecosystem.

SmartEn-UP

SmartEn-UP develops open-source tools for smart energy monitoring and control that let households and small enterprises track, optimise, and reduce their energy consumption — without replacing existing appliances. By retrofitting devices with low-cost IoT sensors, the project extends product lifetimes and cuts electronic waste, in line with the EU Circular Economy Action Plan.

Project goals

SmartEn-UP tackles energy efficiency in households and small enterprises by combining IoT sensor technology, smart-grid integration, and circular-economy principles. Across the Slovenia–Austria border region, the consortium unites research (UL, SAL), industry (ETI, Gorenje), and energy-awareness expertise (Energieforum Kärnten) to develop, validate in real-world pilots, and openly share a complete energy-management ecosystem. Its objectives are to:

  • Develop an open-source energy-management software platform (based on Home Assistant) for monitoring, visualisation, and automated control.
  • Design a low-cost IoT retrofitting module that adds real-time energy monitoring to existing household appliances.
  • Build a smart EV charging-station prototype with grid-friendly load balancing.
  • Validate all outputs through real-world pilot deployments and disseminate them via a publicly accessible digital platform.
  • Strengthen regional energy and digital competences through cross-border workshops and advisory services.

Results

The project will deliver:

  • One cross border pilot solution for smart energy management, integrating household appliances and EV charging infrastructure, jointly developed and deployed in real operating conditions.
  • A modular open source software package for energy monitoring and automated control, published for free reuse and maintained beyond the project term.
  • Hardware demonstrators: a retrofitting module for existing appliances (SAL, ETI), a newly integrated smart appliance (Gorenje), and a smart EV charging station with dynamic load management (ETI).
  • A comparative analysis of energy regulations, tariff systems, and grid fee models in Slovenia and Austria, as the basis for the control strategies.
  • A public digital platform plus cross border workshops and individual energy advisory for households, farms, and SMEs.
  • Five organisations cooperating across the border on smart energy solutions, with cooperation continuing after project closure, and at least one solution taken up or scaled up by an external organisation.

FAMES

The FAMES pilot line is a cooperative initiative under the European Chips Act to develop advanced 10 nm and 7 nm FD-SOI technologies for innovative semiconductor applications. It brings together European partners to foster a freely accessible manufacturing ecosystem. Within the project, SAL is developing self-biased magnetic circulators intended for integration into the 22 nm FDX FD-SOI technology provided by CEA-LETI….

Mag-TF

The Mag-TF initiative aims to establish a pilot facility for the development, manufacturing, and characterization of advanced magnetic thin films for spintronic and MEMS applications. This includes the acquisition of specialized equipment for thin film deposition as well as for wafer-level magnetic device characterization. The Mag-TF infrastructure will be integrated into the existing SAL microfabrication facility.

Tiny Power Box 2

In the „Tiny Power Box 2“ project, the focus, as in the predecessor project „Tiny Power Box 1“, is on a further increase in the power density of charging devices for e-cars, so-called on-board chargers. The renewed goal is to further reduce weight and size. With the latest semiconductor technologies and optimized topology, as well as targeted thermo-mechanical optimization, the new on-board charger is intended to come even closer to an industrializable prototype...
