Power Electronics & Energy Systems

Power electronics deals with the conversion, control, and conditioning of electric power using semiconductor devices. Power electronics enables our modern life and contributes to a future sustainable, low carbon footprint society.

Electrification today is driven by three major global trends: energy transition, mobility, and digitalization. These trends manifest through:

  • the rapid expansion of renewable energy and the emergence of DC grids,
  • the electrification of transportation, and
  • the growth of IoT, high-performance computing, and wireless power transfer.

Power electronics is a central key technology in all these areas. Advances in wide-bandgap semiconductor devices like SiC and GaN enable designs with high power density. These devices unlock new power and efficiency potentials, but also present significant challenges in terms of power transmission, thermal management, and electromagnetic compatibility.

The applications cover a broad range of power‑electronics solutions, from electric mobility and transportation systems to industrial automation and energy‑intensive processes, renewable and distributed energy infrastructures, marine and aerospace electrification, and high‑performance IT and datacenter power delivery, emphasizing efficient power conversion, reliable energy management, and scalable electrification across diverse operating environments.

Our core expertise addresses key industry trends through high‑frequency and high‑power power converters, combining advanced modeling, innovative packaging, state‑of‑the‑art control, and EMC‑compliant operation. We develop modular, scalable converter architectures for next‑generation grids and compact, integrated motor drive converters for traction and propulsion using novel topologies. Our work emphasizes lifecycle‑optimized power electronic systems, integrating cost, efficiency, maintenance, and recyclability, supported by AI‑assisted design, control, and digital twins.

Projects

Our projects showcase the range of innovative solutions to address key technological challenges.

Tiny Power Box 2

In the „Tiny Power Box 2“ project, the focus, as in the predecessor project „Tiny Power Box 1“, is on a further increase in the power density of charging devices for e-cars, so-called on-board chargers. The renewed goal is to further reduce weight and size. With the latest semiconductor technologies and optimized topology, as well as targeted thermo-mechanical optimization, the new on-board charger is intended to come even closer to an industrializable prototype...

Genesis

The „GENESIS“ project researches the coupling mechanisms of electromagnetic interferences from automotive traction inverters. This forms the basis for a much stronger integration of simulation into the design of such inverters than has been the case to date....
