System-Level Integration Technologies

Research Focus Areas

System-Level Integration Technologies focuses on the increasing integration of PE modules and systems, high fidelity characterization and modelling of power electronic components as well as on optimized and very compact integrated power converter systems with integrated enhanced functionalities (e.g., prognosis, diag-nosis, advanced measurements, parameter estimation, gate driving, and state-of-health monitoring). Integration of enhanced functionalities and "intelligence", empowered by machine learning approaches, is a new development direction towards the digitalization of PE systems.

Research Expertise

  • High-fidelity multi-physics component modeling through experimental characterization and measurements allows the optimization of the system towards high-power density and integration of enhanced functionalities
  • Accurate multi-physics modelling of materials, components and subsystems which are not available from manufacturers and are normally not completely considered in the design of PE systems, e.g., related to packaging details, thermal behavior, high-frequency modelling and parasitics, material properties, etc.
  • A more accurate design process and simulation of PE components and systems allows optimization of the functional, mechanical and thermal performance of the power converter towards 3D integration, embedding of components and highest-power density.
  • Dependable Power Electronics: The inclusion of above mentioned detailed component models through “intelligence” and enhanced functionalities aims at more dependable PE systems.
  • Design and optimization of system-level integrated power electronics, modules and systems with enhanced functionalities going beyond state-of-the-art by e.g., multi-domain design and multi-physics simulations, 3D system integration, advanced cooling solutions, active and passive component embedding, advanced gate driving and diagnostic functions.

Projects

InnoTract

By combining single-stage onboard chargers, integrated DC/DC converters, and T-type inverter drives, InnoTract offers industry-leading power density based on state-of-the-art wide-bandgap switching elements and AlN substrates. This advanced integration is designed for superior thermal performance, ensuring compact reliability while pursuing a stringent, ecologically motivated „cradle-to-grave“ approach for truly sustainable electric mobility.

DC Microgrid

The Silicon Austria Labs (SAL) research center, in collaboration with 11 international partners from science and industry, is driving innovative direct current technologies and direct current grids forward. The DC-MicroGrid project aims to accelerate the energy transition in industry and to enable more efficient, sustainable, and flexible energy systems.

Tiny Power Box 2

In the „Tiny Power Box 2“ project, the focus, as in the predecessor project „Tiny Power Box 1“, is on a further increase in the power density of charging devices for e-cars, so-called on-board chargers. The renewed goal is to further reduce weight and size. With the latest semiconductor technologies and optimized topology, as well as targeted thermo-mechanical optimization, the new on-board charger is intended to come even closer to an industrializable prototype...
