SUNRISE

The research project SUNRISE (SUstainable depeNdable Rocket propulsion by Intelligent SEnsing) aims to explore intelligent sensing concepts as well as virtual sensing for rocket engines and test benches. Specifically, the research team around project leader Manuel Freiberger, Research Unit Trustworthy & Adaptive Computing, will investigate the use of AI techniques for an intelligent and reliable sensor concept for liquid rocket engines.

Sustainability plays a role in more and more areas of our daily lives - including space. To ensure Europe's independent, cost-effective and secure access to space and the technologies that depend on it (for example, for communications or Earth observation systems), new sustainable technologies must be developed. One possible solution are reusable rocket launcher systems. Together with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), SAL has set itself the task of developing a future-oriented data acquisition concept.

The potential of reusable launcher systems

To date, rocket carrier systems are mainly one-use products, the loss of which is accepted when launching a rocket. However, reusable carrier systems would not only be the more sustainable solution for our climate and environment, but also the more economically efficient way to save money in the aerospace industry in future applications. As a result, communication and earth observation technologies that are dependent on the aerospace industry can be made available to a broader customer base and access to space can be secured.

The first step towards a more efficient aerospace industry is the intelligent regulation of rocket carrier systems, which can be used to collect key data and analyze it in order to optimize the operation and duration of existing carrier systems.

SUNRISE will thus pave the way to increasing the economic and environmental efficiency of these engines and secure Europe's independent and cost-effective access to space by ensuring international competitiveness in launch vehicle technology.
