LASER IGNITION FOR ENGINES

Revolution with laser spark plug: The design and development of a laser that ignites the fuel mixture means that it can replace conventional spark plugs.

PROJECT BACKGROUND

AVL List GmbH is a leading international engine and instrumentation developer. The objective of SAL’s work with AVL was to design a laser that could fit in the spark plug package with sufficient power to ignite the fuel mixture and achieve optimum efficiency. Previous attempts focused on trying to reduce the size of conventional spark plugs. The spark plug diameter is however limited by the insulator properties. Research into laser spark plugs therefore aims to eliminate this limitation. Laser ignition has the following advantages: freely selectable location of the ignition plasma, therefore relatively complete, low-emission combustion and consequently minimal material wear.

PROJECT CONTENT

SAL designed the laser and housing for installation in the spark plug well and the electronics. Developed for use in petrol or gas engines, the laser ignition system withstands both the vibrations occurring in the engine and high temperatures (up to 300° Celsius). The system is patented.
