Insights into SAL’s mission, values, research activities, and contribution to Europe’s innovation ecosystem.

MPOS

The MPOS project is aimed at increasing our understanding and demonstrating the potential of magnetic sensor-grid applications for position and orientation detection. It emphasizes stray-field compensation and reducing calibration effort in state-of-the-art magnetic positioning and orientation systems.

Project goals

  • Development of novel layouts of magnetic positioning and orientation systems making use of sensor-array detection and designing magnet layouts to-purpose with focus on industrial realization (tolerances, cost, calibration, ...)
  • Development of algorithms based on analytical models for high-dimensional optimization of system quality for maximizing magnetic robustness under challenging industrial, automotive, and consumer conditions
  • Development of inversion schemes for state computation and read-out on microcontrollers
  • Making use of additional information from magnetic sensor-grid for extended functionality
  • Study of unconventional novel systems, specifically the detection of leakage current and switch button position

The project enables the development of advanced measurement and calibration procedures for magnetic sensing systems, including 3D Helmholtz coil orthogonality estimation and the calibration of 3D Hall sensors while accounting for alignment errors and environmental influences. It also supports the implementation of sensor-grid applications for reliable state detection in systems with continuous or discrete motion, such as tilting, rotating, or switching mechanisms. In addition, it drives the development of auto-calibration algorithms with real-time tolerance correction, as well as AI-based methods for state detection and device calibration directly on sensors or system microcontrollers.
