Mag-speak

The goal of the “Mag-Speak” project was to develop, manufacture, and test a new generation of MEMS woofer micro-speakers based on magnetic drive principles. The goal was to create a proof-of-concept micro-speaker that offers a significantly more compact design compared to current state-of-the-art systems, while simultaneously achieving a sound pressure level and total harmonic distortion values that meet market requirements for woofers.

Project goals

  • Development of Novel Planar Woofer Micro-Speakers
  • Coverage of the entire research and development chain—from component concept design (using combined acoustic and magnetic simulations) through component manufacturing to the assembly and testing of proof-of-concept prototypes
  • Optimizing the Design of Magnetic MEMS Micro-Speakers Using Fast Analytical Simulations
  • Development and Characterization of NdFeB Permanent Micromagnets (structural size: several tens to several hundreds of µm; magnetic properties comparable to those of sintered bulk magnets) Using Ultrashort-Pulsed Laser Micromachining
  • Fabrication and Characterization of Electroplated, Two-Layer Planar Microspools

As part of the project, proof-of-concept demonstrators for MEMS micro-speakers were assembled using heterogeneous integration techniques and subsequently acoustically characterized in terms of their sound pressure level (SPL) and harmonic distortion characteristics.
