Research Focus Areas

Our research and development activities focus on advancing printed electronics and translating them into practical, sustainable, and innovative solutions for industrial applications. We develop technologies that optimize products, improve manufacturing processes, reduce logistics costs, and enable smart sensor systems. In doing so, we take into account key requirements such as cost-efficiency, flexible form factors, and minimal environmental impact.

As an R&D partner for industry and scientific institutions, we offer comprehensive expertise across the entire value chain—from concept development and system design through modeling, material development, manufacturing, integration, and data processing to validation. This also includes the development of demonstrators with standard interfaces and protocols. In all our activities, we prioritize energy-efficient solutions, resource efficiency, and sustainability.

Our interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers brings together a broad range of expertise to develop innovative solutions based on customized hardware and software. Our goal is to create scalable, production-ready devices and processes that can be seamlessly integrated into real-world products.

Research Expertise

  • Physical and (bio)chemical sensors – A wide range of sensors, e.g., for temperature, humidity, strain, force, gases, and liquids, on any suitable substrate (polymers, paper, metals, wood, …).
  • Flexible, large-area electronics—electronic components and circuit traces integrated onto any substrate, including flexible, stretchable, and transparent materials.
  • Energy generation and storage systems – organic photovoltaics and piezoelectric components, as well as printed batteries, capacitors, and supercapacitors.
  • Chip and Component Integration – Hybrid integration of printed and discrete components.
  • Functional Surface Technology and Modification – Protective or Insulating Coatings. Surface Functionalization for (Bio)chemical Applications.
  • Materials Technology and Modification – Development and Adaptation of Inks and Substrates.
  • Sustainable design, materials, and life cycle analysis—development of sustainable inks and substrates. Energy- and resource-efficient designs and processes.

Projects

Ennocure

The company Ennocure GmbH is developing an AI-powered electronic bandage that monitors wounds in real-time, detects complications early, and enables personalized treatment. In collaboration with Silicon Austria Labs, a battery-powered demonstrator has also been developed that specifically transmits signals to further optimize the healing process based on data.

KERMIT

KERMIT is developing a wearable, sweat-sensitive skin patch for the early detection and remote monitoring of kidney disease. The project integrates printed electrochemical sensors, sweat stimulation, microfluidics, low-power electronics, and wireless communication in a soft, integrated patch platform….

Smart Bark Beetle Trap

In a joint project by Priot d.o.o. and Silicon Austria Labs, an intelligent, energy-autonomous bark beetle trap has been developed. It uses printed sensors, solar energy, and wireless data transmission to monitor infestation in real-time. This replaces labor-intensive manual monitoring, reduces workload, and simultaneously provides more precise data for more effective and sustainable control strategies.
