Sunrise

The re­search project SUNRISE (SUstain­able depeNd­able Rocket propul­sion by Intel­li­gent SEnsing) aims to explore intel­li­gent sensing concepts as well as virtual sensing for rocket engines and test benches. Specif­i­cally, the re­search team around project leader Manuel Freiberger, Re­search Unit Trust­worthy & Adap­tive Computing, will inves­ti­gate the use of AI tech­niques for an intel­li­gent and reli­able sensor concept for liquid rocket engines.

Project goals

Sustain­ability plays a role in more and more areas of our daily lives - including space. To ensure Europe's inde­pen­dent, cost-effec­tive and secure access to space and the tech­nolo­gies that depend on it (for example, for commu­ni­ca­tions or Earth obser­va­tion systems), new sustain­able tech­nolo­gies must be devel­oped. One possible solu­tion are reusable rocket launcher systems. Together with the German Aero­space Center (DLR), SAL has set itself the task of devel­oping a future-oriented data acqui­si­tion concept.

The potential of reusable carrier systems

To date, rocket carrier systems are mainly one-use prod­ucts, the loss of which is accepted when launching a rocket. However, reusable carrier systems would not only be the more sustain­able solu­tion for our climate and envi­ron­ment, but also the more econom­i­cally effi­cient way to save money in the aero­space industry in future appli­ca­tions. As a result, commu­ni­ca­tion and earth obser­va­tion tech­nolo­gies that are depen­dent on the aero­space industry can be made avail­able to a broader customer base and access to space can be secured.

The first step towards a more effi­cient aero­space industry is the intel­li­gent regu­la­tion of rocket carrier systems, which can be used to collect key data and analyze it in order to opti­mize the oper­a­tion and dura­tion of existing carrier systems.

SUNRISE will thus pave the way to increasing the economic and envi­ron­mental effi­ciency of these engines and secure Europe's inde­pen­dent and cost-effec­tive access to space by ensuring inter­na­tional compet­i­tive­ness in launch vehicle tech­nology.
