The BIG is constructing a research and development center with a total floor space of 4,600 square meters (49,500 sq. ft.) for sensor technology and microelectronics on behalf of the TU Graz with financial support from the Province of Styria and the EU. The investment volume amounts to a total of 15 million euros. The seven-story building is geared toward businesses and cooperative projects between science and industry and includes laboratories, workshops, offices and seminar rooms. Half of the space is reserved for university spin-offs and small/medium-sized microelectronics businesses, while the other half will be used by the faculty for electrical engineering and information technology and incorporates a makerspace for students.

"Microelectronics is the key technology in digital transformation, and about 80 percent of the Austria-wide value creation in this sector takes place in Styria and Carinthia. With the new microelectronics research center for Silicon Austria Labs, whose temporary headquarters will also be situated in this building, the Electronic Based Systems Center represents an important foundation for cooperative projects between science and industry."
Barbara Eibinger-Miedl, Styrian State Minister for Commerce, Tourism, Europe, Science and Research

"The building will be home to scientific research and pioneering industrial cooperative efforts, and it will strengthen the business location as an international research center for electronic based systems."
Harald Kainz, Rector of the University of Technology in Graz
