About SAL

Insights into SAL’s mission, values, research activities, and contribution to Europe’s innovation ecosystem.

PIXEL

The PIXEL project developed advanced piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers (PMUTs) for next-generation gas flowmeters, enabling reliable and accurate flow measurement in harsh environments.

Project goals

The main objective of the project was to develop a new generation of PMUT-based ultrasonic sensors, spanning the entire innovation chain from initial concept to a functional demonstrator.

Further research objectives included:

  • Development of wideband PMUT arrays to enhance measurement accuracy
  • Ensuring reliable operation under harsh conditions, such as high pressure and temperature
  • Compensation of frequency shifts caused by environmental variations
  • Demonstration of a fully functional gas flow sensing system

The PIXEL project delivered a unique PMUT-based ultrasonic sensing platform that significantly improved bandwidth and operational robustness compared to conventional solutions. It demonstrated, for the first time, the feasibility of wideband air-coupled PMUT arrays for gas flow measurement under harsh conditions.
