Computing & Embedded Intelligence

Shaping the future of decentralized intelligence from the hardware up.

We design the brains behind machines. By integrating high‑performance computing and embedded systems, we unlock real‑time, decentralized intelligence at the edge — spanning the full stack from hardware architectures to AI and algorithms.

Today’s technological breakthroughs are driven by ever‑increasing computing power and the growing complexity of what chips can compute. Emerging paradigms, like quantum computing, are continuing this trend, promising operations classical CPUs cannot match. This evolution at the hardware level is the foundation for smarter algorithms — fuelling breakthroughs in signal processing, artificial intelligence, and beyond.

At Silicon Austria Labs (SAL), we dedicate a significant part of our research to advancing Computing & Embedded Intelligence across key application domains, including Edge Computing, System‑on‑Chip (SoC) design, real‑time systems, and embedded platforms.

Our expertise spans the full technology stack – from software to hardware. For example, SAL is working on

  • Ion Traps that can be used to for scalable quantum computing
  • Special hardware accelerators and CPUs for different platforms including RISC-V
  • Algorithms for embedded and distributed AI
  • Verification and validation approaches for reliable and trustworthy intelligent systems
  • Software tools and libraries to fully exploit hardware capabilities

Through combining deep hardware insight with advanced software and algorithms, SAL delivers end‑to‑end solutions tailored to our partners’ needs—ensuring they stay one step ahead in performance, efficiency, and innovation.

Our projects showcase the range of innovative solutions to address key technological challenges.

FIRESAT

The project „FIRESAT“ investigates the challenges and benefits of using artificial intelligence (AI) for on-board processing directly on Earth observation satellites. The ESA mission „OPSSAT,“ as well as OroraTech's dedicated CubeSAT platform, will be used for in-flight experiments to demonstrate the feasibility of the use case – satellite-based forest fire detection using on-board AI analysis of live RGB images....
