About SAL

Insights into SAL’s mission, values, research activities, and contribution to Europe’s innovation ecosystem.

Opal

OPAL focused on the development of SAL’s first integrated optical phased array for LIDAR applications. Special attention was devoted to the selection of the optical photonic platform to achieve low loss and high bandwidth operation.

Project goals

The project goals were:

  • Development of know-how on market valuable integrated photonics sensing application
  • Improvement of CR processing capabilities at SAL
  • Definition of a PIC platform for circuit integration and to perform simulation, design and circuit layout in-house
  • Investigation of approaches for optical and electronics co-packaging

As part of the project, the first optical phased array integrated at SAL for LiDAR applications was developed. This demonstrated a SiN-based OPA for the first time, achieving state-of-the-art optical performance.
