FIBRE-X

Fibre-X develops miniaturized, cost-efficient, and robust FBG sensor solutions for precise measurements under demanding industrial conditions.

Objectives

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors enable precise, long-term stable measurements of physical quantities—such as temperature, strain, vibration, or pressure—that are immune to electromagnetic interference. They are particularly well-suited for applications where conventional electrical sensors reach their operational limits.

However, their widespread industrial adoption is often constrained by the space requirements, power consumption, and costs of the associated evaluation electronics (interrogators), as well as by the challenges related to sensor integration and reliability under extreme environmental conditions.

Fibre-X addresses these challenges by developing miniaturized, energy-efficient, and robust FBG sensor solutions that are tailored to specific industrial applications and validated under relevant operating conditions.

Expected Results

  • Miniaturization: Development of compact, energy-efficient interrogator concepts for applications with limited installation space and restricted power supply.
  • Robustness: Development and investigation of suitable sensor packaging, fiber integration methods, and system concepts for demanding environments.
  • Application orientation: Tailoring sensor technology to diverse requirements regarding the measurand, measurement range, number of measurement points, accuracy, bandwidth, and service life.
  • Validation: Construction and testing of demonstrators based on selected industrial use cases.
  • Technology transfer: Development of integration concepts and foundations for industrial implementation, in collaboration with project partners.
