Pilot Lines & Chip Services

We connect research and industry to develop, test, and scale Europe’s next generation semiconductor technologies.
The EU Chips Act is Europe's strategic answer to a global challenge: securing the continent's semiconductor supply chain, boosting domestic chip production, and reducing technological dependencies. Through Pilot Lines, Chip Design Platforms, and Competence Centers, it creates open-access infrastructure that bridges research and industry — enabling startups, SMEs, and research institutions to develop, test, and scale next-generation chip technologies on European soil. Silicon Austria Labs is an active partner across several of these initiatives, contributing expertise and connecting Austrian and European innovators to the future of electronics.

Pilot Lines

FAMES establishes a cutting-edge European Pilot Line for microelectronic technologies, delivering higher performance, greater energy efficiency, and more sustainable chip designs. The initiative provides open access to all stakeholders in the electronics value chain — directly supporting the EU Chips Act's ambition to strengthen European semiconductor leadership through R&D, training, and technology access.

The Wide-Bandgap Semiconductor Pilot Line focuses on power and RF electronics that far outperform conventional silicon technology. It addresses front-end fabrication challenges, defines a development roadmap for advanced WBG and Ultra-WBG materials, and explores new MEMS device concepts — laying the foundation for Europe's next generation of high-power, high-frequency semiconductor components.

PIXEurope is Europe's first fully integrated Pilot Line for Photonic Integrated Circuits — a critical technology for high-speed computing, communications, and quantum systems. Spanning multiple coordinated European sites, it connects the full PIC value chain from design and fabrication through to packaging and testing within a unified, standardised framework.

Quantum Pilot Lines

CHAMP-ION builds Europe's first open-access production network for ion-trap quantum chips — covering the full value chain from design to microfabrication, testing, and integrated electronic and photonic features. With dedicated Process Design Kits and a focus on SME and startup access, it is securing a resilient EU supply chain for quantum communication, sensing, and computing.

SUPREME scales the fabrication of superconducting chips and components in Europe, targeting some of the most demanding quantum hardware requirements. With €50M in investment, the pilot line positions European industry and research at the forefront of superconducting quantum technology development.

DIREQT scales the fabrication and use of NV-centres in single-crystal synthetic diamonds — materials that are intrinsically quantum chips. Backed by €50M, this pilot line enables European-made diamond-based quantum hardware for sensing, computing, and communications applications.

Q-PLANET establishes a pan-European production pilot line for neutral atom quantum chips — one of the most promising platforms for scalable quantum computing. With €50M in investment and a comprehensive pan-European strategy, it paves the way for industrial deployment of this transformative technology across the continent.

Chip Design

EuroCDP is a European online marketplace giving startups, SMEs, and R&D teams seamless access to chip design tools, IP, manufacturing services, expert support, training, and funding — all in one place. By pooling pre-negotiated resources, it dramatically lowers the cost and complexity of chip design, helping more European innovators move from concept to silicon faster.

CHIPSIDEA gives industry partners exclusive access to a production-grade, automotive-qualified 130 nm SiGe BiCMOS technology — developed and manufactured in Europe. Powered by SAL and ParityQC, it combines research excellence with industrial expertise across RF, mm-Wave, sensors, power electronics, and heterogeneous integration, with direct interfaces to EU Pilot Lines and EuroCDP.

Competence Centers

AT-C³ is one of Europe's first Chips Act-funded competence centers and serves as Austria's central one-stop-shop for the entire Electronic & Software-Based Systems value chain. With a focus on supporting SMEs and startups, it connects companies and research organisations with the expertise, infrastructure, and funding they need to innovate in microelectronics.
