About SAL

Insights into SAL’s mission, values, research activities, and contribution to Europe’s innovation ecosystem.

CHAMP-ION

The CHAMP-ION project, coordinated by Silicon Austria Labs (SAL), delivers the first phase of a seven-year strategic framework partnership agreement (FPA) to establish a sustainable and scalable pilot line network across for ion-trap chips the EU. This network is set to advance ion trap chip innovation and mobilize the European ecosystem to enable high-quality mass industrial production.

Project goals

The ambition of CHAMP-ION is to drive the technology transfer from experimental production of ion traps to high yield, high quality production with advanced features in Europe. The strategic objectives of this ambition include

  • coordinating appropriate internal management and governance of the Pilot Line and its features
  • establishing and then operating high quality fabrication capabilities for Ion Trap Chips
  • ensuring validity of standard traps and enable advanced feature integration enabling scalable and efficient solutions for quantum technologies and
  • fostering inclusive network outreach activities, including a professionally managed single entry point, to enhance the market of interested target groups who can foster European utilization of Ion Trap Chips to promote improved quantum processing strategic autonomy.

CHAMP-ION, the European Ion Trap Pilot Line, is supported by the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU), Horizon Europe, and the National Public Authorities of the partners involved in the Framework Partnership Agreement Grant No. 101233101 and Specific Grant Agreement No. 101288915.
