Ultrafast processes in light-matter interaction investigated with femto- and attosecond laser spectroscopy

Abstract: Primary processes in materials triggered by photoexcitation often involve simultaneously the change of electronic and nuclear structure, and typically proceed on time scales in the range of picoseconds (10-12 s) to attoseconds (10-18 s). Real-time observation and investigation of these processes is possible with ultrashort light pulses in pump-probe experiments. We will discuss examples, including dynamical investigations of single molecules in isolation, in nanometer-sized cryogenic environments and observations of light-field driven charge dynamics in prototypical semiconductors. An outlook on future activities will be given and we will present our efforts to simultaneously achieve extreme temporal and spatial resolution employing advanced microscopy setups and imaging detector systems.
