PICs, which transmit data using light instead of elec\u00adtrical signals, enable commu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adtion with higher band\u00adwidth and lower energy consump\u00adtion. These chips will repre\u00adsent the back\u00adbone of future 6G networks, data centers, arti\u00adfi\u00adcial intel\u00adli\u00adgence or biomed\u00adical devices. By inte\u00adgrating multiple func\u00adtions into a single chip, PICs reduce manu\u00adfac\u00adturing costs and enable novel appli\u00adca\u00adtion areas, posi\u00adtioning Europe as a global leader in next-gener\u00ada\u00adtion photonic tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Austrian Minister for Inno\u00adva\u00adtion Peter Hanke comments: \u201cRe\u00adsearch and tech\u00adnology are the driving forces behind Austria's produc\u00adtivity and compet\u00adi\u00adtive\u00adness. A key focus for SAL will be the inte\u00adgra\u00adtion of high-perfor\u00admance electro-optic mate\u00adrials such as Thin-Film Lithium Niobate (TFLN) and Aluminum Nitride (AlN). These mate\u00adrials will be inte\u00adgrated onto silicon and silicon nitride PIC plat\u00adforms, enabling ultra-fast modu\u00adla\u00adtion, low-power photonic signal process\u00ading, and broad\u00adband oper\u00ada\u00adtion.
