The results enable more compact, reli\u00adable, and fault-tolerant elec\u00adtrical systems for future elec\u00adtric vehi\u00adcles.<\/p>\n<p>After a two-year run, the REDSEL re\u00adsearch project was success\u00adfully completed. The project focused on devel\u00adoping a redun\u00addant high-voltage\/\u200blow-voltage elec\u00adtrical system archi\u00adtec\u00adture that enables a flex\u00adible and fail-safe power supply in elec\u00adtric vehi\u00adcles. This approach makes it possible to elim\u00adi\u00adnate the need for the tradi\u00adtional low-voltage battery in elec\u00adtric cars in the long term.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe tech\u00adnolo\u00adgies we\u2019ve devel\u00adoped lay the ground\u00adwork for lighter and more robust vehicle elec\u00adtrical systems, thereby making a signif\u00adi\u00adcant contri\u00adbu\u00adtion to the advance\u00adment of elec\u00adtric mobility\u2014all the way to future autonomous appli\u00adca\u00adtions,\u201d<\/em>, erkl\u00e4rt<strong> DI Albert Frank, Projekt\u00adleiter bei Silicon Austria Labs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adical inno\u00adva\u00adtions for robust vehicle elec\u00adtrical systems<\/h2>\n<p>At the heart of REDSEL is a redun\u00addant system archi\u00adtec\u00adture with active load balancing between two high-voltage batteries, which ensures even load distri\u00adb\u00adu\u00adtion and signif\u00adi\u00adcantly increases oper\u00ada\u00adtional reli\u00ada\u00adbility. This was comple\u00admented by the devel\u00adop\u00adment of a power elec\u00adtronics converter with multiple inputs, which\u2014thanks to an inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive magnetic inte\u00adgra\u00adtion concept\u2014could be designed to be partic\u00adu\u00adlarly compact, effi\u00adcient, and space-saving.<\/p>\n<p>Tech\u00adno\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcally, the project relied on newest semi\u00adcon\u00adductor solu\u00adtions: On the high-voltage side, 750V silicon carbide MOSFETs (CoolSiC\u2122) were used, while on the low-voltage side, 30V OptiMOS\u2122-7 devices were employed for the first time, offering signif\u00adi\u00adcant effi\u00adciency advan\u00adtages over previous 40-V solu\u00adtions. Improved elec\u00adtrical system spec\u00adi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtions in modern elec\u00adtric vehi\u00adcles enabled the safe use of these early devel\u00adop\u00adment proto\u00adtypes.<\/p>\n<p>In addi\u00adtion, a new safety archi\u00adtec\u00adture for switching and shut\u00addown func\u00adtions has been devel\u00adoped, replacing mechan\u00adical relays with semi\u00adcon\u00adductor switches. This increases reli\u00ada\u00adbility, reduces the required instal\u00adla\u00adtion space and weight, and enhances the system\u2019s oper\u00ada\u00adtional safety.<\/p>\n<h2>Strong industry-re\u00adsearch collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion as a key to success<\/h2>\n<p><em>\u201cREDSEL is an excel\u00adlent example of how new, inno\u00adv\u00ada\u00adtive system solu\u00adtions can emerge through collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion between acad\u00ademic and indus\u00adtrial part\u00adners.
