Sensor Systems

Sensory organs of digital life

In the Sensor Systems research division, the team uses the basis of state-of-the-art technologies to work on different sensors that collect information from the environment, inspired by all five senses. From the multitude of sensors, it is important to find the optimum combination in order to use it, with the help of intelligent algorithms and recent developments, to expand the heterogeneous integration of smart sensor systems for various applications.

RF Systems

Enable wireless connectivity

In the RF Systems (RF – Radio Frequency) research division, everything is part of innovative solutions for wireless communication and radar technologies that cover the complete radio-frequency spectrum – from the MHz range to the very high GHz range. In the wireless sensor networks area of research, there are strong ties with the Sensor Systems division.

Power Electronics

Convert energy efficiently

In the Power Electronics research division, new, more-powerful solutions are researched for all types of electric energy transformers in all power classes, from the system and control design, through to switching structures and to integration methods and construction elements in new technologies.


Combine diverse technologies

The re­search area System Inte­gra­tion Tech­nolo­gies deals with the hard­ware part of system inte­gra­tion. In order to connect the indi­vidual compo­nents of an elec­tronic system with each other, hetero­ge­neous inte­gra­tion tech­nolo­gies, exten­sive knowl­edge of elec­tro­magnet compat­i­bility testing and multi­phys­ical system simu­la­tion are required. 

Embedded Systems

The re­search area Embedded Systems is inspired by the mega­trend of things becoming more intel­li­gent, connected, energy-effi­cient and sustain­able. The growth of arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence beyond the cloud into the areas of edge computing and thus into embedded systems proves to be an impor­tant cata­lyst for this mega­trend.

Together with Infineon Technologies Linz and JKU Linz, Silicon Austria Labs is researching simple arrays made of metal, which will later function as thin lenses and active reflectors. These make an important contribution to new technologies such as 6G.

Metamaterials are structures made of ordinary materials. However, these ordinary materials have unusual or even impossible properties. In the division RF systems at SAL, researchers are working on creating components from everyday materials such as metals and plastics that affect electromagnetic waves in unusual ways. On the one hand, components such as ultra-thin lenses, perfect reflectors and absorbers, or polarizers manipulate the propagating radiation. On the other hand, integrated structures can significantly support resonators and antennas.

The variety of applications of metamaterials is thus huge and will make an essential contribution to new technologies in communications technology...
